Achieving Efficient Channel Utilization and Weighted Fairness for Data Communications in IEEE 802.11 WLAN under the DCF

چکیده
Fair allocation of bandwidth and maximization of channel utilization are two important issues when designing a contention-based wireless medium access control (MAC) protocol. However, achieving both design goals at the same time is very difficult, and has not yet been addressed elsewhere. In this paper, we study this challenging problem, particularly for data communications in IEEE 802.11 wireless local-area networks (WLANs). We propose a priority-based fair medium access control (PMAC) protocol by modifying the Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) of the IEEE 802.11 MAC. The key idea is that the contention window size for each wireless station is properly selected to (1) reflect the relative weights among data traffic flows, so as to achieve the weighted fairness; and (2) reflect the number of stations contending for the wireless medium, so as to maximize the aggregate throughput. In P-MAC, our approximations to the optimal contention window sizes, which are based on a theoretical analysis, are evaluated numerically and shown to work well under different network configurations and traffic scenarios. Moreover, simulation results show that, with few changes to the original DCF, P-MAC performs significantly better in terms of both fairness and throughput.

In this paper, we consider the problem of providing weighted fairness among multiple priority classes in a IEEE 802.11-based wireless local area network (WLAN). An enhanced DCF method is proposed to properly control the transmission probability of a node that can reflect the weighted fair share among the data traffic flows in the multi-class environment. For this method, we present an analytica...

A Reservation-Based Enhancement of IEEE 802.11 DCF Protocol
IEEE 802.11 DCF is an asynchronous and distributed MAC protocol which does not require the existence of a central controller for medium access coordination. This flexibility, which is due to DCF’s contention-based nature, comes at the expense of the overhead associated with contention resolution. The overhead consists of frame collision time and channel idle time, which is particularly severe w...

The IEEE 802.11b medium access control (MAC) protocol is gaining widespread popularity as a layer-2 protocol for wireless local area networks (WLANs). A good MAC protocol for WLANs should provide an efficient mechanism to share a limited wireless channel bandwidth, together with high bandwidth utilization and fairness in serving all stations. In this paper we study the performance of IEEE 802.1...
